Ten Open Secrets You Need To Start a Successful Business

If you want to succeed, it is usually positive, beware of negative circumstances, not failure.

Last updated: Mar 17, 2026

What makes people successful, I mean what do you and I compare to what really makes us successful? Is it being smart or is its hard work? Is it being more adventurous or having more friends?

A financial newspaper, Investor's Business Daily, has also asked this question and is looking for answers. They studied industry leaders, investors and entrepreneurs and learnt that they share common traits that have contributed to their success. Here are ten secrets to success.

1, Thinking positively is paramount.
If you want to succeed, it is usually better to be positive and beware of negative circumstances than to fail.

This trait is the most important of the ten. Your belief that you can accomplish your goals must be unwavering. If you say to yourself "I can't", then that's all you need. My advice is not to say "I can't" and to get those words out of the dictionary.

I find that it's often the attitude that automatically gives up. One of my mentors said, "The city doesn't take pity on anyone, if you can't stay, you'll have to leave". Do positive things and be positive people.

2, Identify your dreams and goals, write down specific goals and your step-by-step plan to reach them.

Is writing down dreams and goals and making a plan to achieve them? Do you mean just like writing a project plan? Yes, it is. And what does this mean? You may have heard the adage that a New Year's resolution is just a dream, and dreams are not goals.

Goals are achieved by those concrete, measurable steps that follow up on your goals and achieve your ambitions. My goal is to make writing a second career, what is yours?

3, Take action. Have a goal and take action.
As Nike says, "If you want to do it, do it", take action and start writing. Every day I try to take some action in order to achieve my goals. It may be small, but it's still action. Have you already taken action towards your goal?

4, Never stop learning: go back to school or study, get training in skills.

Make lifelong learning what life has to offer and tell our children to do so. Once you leave school you will realise how enjoyable learning can be. What have you learnt today?

5, Persistence and hard work: success is is a marathon, not a 100-metre sprint, never give up.

I think every success story has persistence and hard work in it, there is no free lunch in this world. But what if you are working hard to achieve what you want, pursuing it because you love it. And then it comes true?

6, Learn to analyse the details, get all the numbers, all the input and learn from your mistakes.

I think you have to make a proper balance strategy between all the facts and incomplete data, both of which are traits of successful people at Easy Carbon, spend some time gathering detailed information and don't analyse for the sake of analysis.

7, Focus your time and money: don't let other people distract you.

Focus on your goals, be a positive person, believe in what's around you. Don't let other things distract you from your goals, they won't help you achieve them.

8, Don’t be afraid to innovate: having your own ideas and following the crowd is the path to mediocrity.

Break the inherent ideas and ask yourself what you would do if you were to innovate?

9, Handle communication with people effectively: no one can survive in isolation, learn to understand and motivate others.

Successful people have a wide range of contacts and treat others openly, fairly and firmly. Don't overstep certain boundaries. So how do you deal with interpersonal communication?

10, Honest and reliable: dare to take responsibility, otherwise none of the above nine are important.
